Very elite with amazing stories behind the design on a non-descript sand pit. Big hitters can cut the corner and get home in two to this elevated green. Be forewarned this is a tough green. Calusa Pines is your typical Hurdzan/Fry with wide fairways, raised greens, and gigantic bunkers. It was almost impossible to play golf but it was still a real treat to play. On a course full of great shot opportunities to execute, the 16th provides the most heroic swing of the day and one you won't soon forget. Incredible conditioning. The bunkers are pretty much gravel. The course is among the best maintained I have ever played. I had two approach shots land 12 ft from pin with spin that rolled off green into rough. The green is deep enough to hold most approach shots and has numerous subtle breaks. See other reviews from michael nowacki. The approach shot plays over the water to a green protected on each side by more bunkers with the putting surface sloping left to right. calusa
A miss to either side will result in one going down a hill or ending up in a bunker on either side. I was told the ridge that hosts the 9th, 12th and 16th tee boxes is the highest point in Collier County. While the length and carry over the marsh area is far from punishing, the steep slopes on either side of the putting surface create a nasty scenario to recover from. This course underwent a true transformation. To Hurdzan/Frys credit the 8th is a short par 4 less than 300 yards. My one critique of the course is that its obviously extremely man made, but with how easily viewable the native shrubbery is from the boundaries of the property, it really reinforces how manufactured the property is. The par 3 11th also has a predominantly left list to its green. Additionally, due to manufacturing some hills by moving dirt, Calusa Pines also has the more interesting terrain.
Demanding course with outstanding green complexes. Down the entire left side of the fairway from tee to green is sand. Another difficult green awaits with swales and slopes behind the bunker placed on the entire right side. Eighteen is a bit of a letdown as a shorter par 5 dogleg left of 512/487 with bunkers down the left side ending at an elevated green. Very beautiful course with abundance of sand and water. Wind can be a factor here; catch Calusa Pines on a low-wind day and only the greens should present a challenge. ", Top marks across the board. I personally thought this was a huge compliment to the course. Calusa is located in Naples, FL and enjoys more elevation changes than most golfers are used to in the Sunshine State. Great clubhouse, fabulous course, conditioning, caddies, practice area, challenge. The green seems easy but is actually one of the speediest ones on the golf course. It is at this point that one realizes that par on any hole is a good score. Played two days after the club championship and it was absolutely diabolical.
This really doesn't bother me but I know for a lot of traditional critics this would set the course back quite a bit. 0 people found this review helpful Tipping out at less than 300 yards, this par four is plenty reachable, however the hole does climb uphill which makes it play longer than the yardage may suggest.
