However, the combo of manual aperture and options to set a fixed manual focus make this rig quite popular with street photogs who tend to point and shoot in the truest sense. All cameras (even the fully mechanical ones) will eventually fail. Aperture: f/2.8 Its this latest version of the GR, the GR1v, that was lent to me by the previously mentioned Ned Bunnell last month. Another titanium, sturdy feeling camera, many would liken the TC-1 as a close cousin of the Contax T2. Shutter: 1 second to 1/700th After shooting a dozen rolls through the Ricoh, Im a bit baffled as to why this camera isnt the most popular film compact on the market today. Size is objective, making it one of the more easily measurable elements of a review. My early 80s Nikons died, my late 90-early 2000s Contaxes keep chugging along. Like the flash mode, it also does not reset with each power cycle. While this wide lens brings all of the benefits and interest mentioned earlier, it also brings a handful of compromises. The last, user control, is more subjective. The 28mm lens of the Ricoh GR1v is a fairly wide lens, even brushing up against the long end of ultra-wide (which technically starts at 24mm when exposing the 24x36mm image area of 35mm film or a full-frame digital sensor). This product photo was made by my four-year-old daughter. At the time of its release, the WP-1 was designed to compete with other underwater 35mm cameras like the Minolta Weathermatic. In the event of the camera back door accidentally opening (were all guilty of it), the exposed images will be preserved as theyre already wound into the film roll. This makes it the safest buy today, though these benefits come with an elevated price. This preserves exposed frames in the event of an accidental film door opening. Also in 1997, Ricoh released the GR1s, a slightly upgraded version of the GR. Average Price Online (Dec 2021): $1100 Desirable features include but are not limited to: DX coding up to 3200 ISO, an impressively sharp lens that is protected by a slider door, a very capable flash (with red eye reduction), and the camera is weatherproof. This takes 2.5 seconds. I didnt hear from him after that, but I hope he was able to get it fixed and use it. Iv been shooting it since then, and its surprised me in many ways. But its the timeless, authentic aesthetic that draws most in. The metering system sees through the filters and will adjust accordingly. Instead, Ricoh bows humbly and hands us a camera. Common with any point and shoot that has stood the test of time, the 35Tis lens is unbelievably sharp and the coating helps with flares when shooting into the sun. Even the most popular film point-and-shoot compacts, the Olympus Mju II, the Yashica T series, the Contax T2 and T3, fail to satisfy the needs of these select photographers in the areas of user control. The L35AF covers the essentials. I realize most phone cameras are around 28mm equivalent these days, but I feel like people shooting film cameras are more selective with their focal lengths. But I think the Ricoh satisfies even this last notoriously tricky demand handily. Nice review, James. Average Price Online (Dec 2021): $250 Impressed? It features a similar Zeiss lens capable of focusing up to 30cm and is housed in a rather dull plastic body (instead of titanium), making it less conspicuous and much lighter, yet still highly effective. The 28mm lens is multicoated with aspherical elements, and is incredibly and unbelievably sharp, and the magnesium-alloy body is sleek and aesthetically flawless. Cons? They gaze longingly at the unoccupied spaces between the Nikon SP Limited Edition and the Rollei 6008 Professional or the Pontiac Super Lynx and the Kodak Ektra, and reach in vain as I carry them by, to rest in their temporary spot on the inventory shelf for cameras that will be sold to customers of my camera shop. And when that buyer pulled the camera from its plastic pouch, theyd believe the fuss. I know how I feel about it. But the Japanese dont fuss, and the manual doesnt say any of this. For compact, electronic point-and-shoot film cameras, a home in the display case of my permanent collection is an unattainable dream. Its great reviews like this one that will drive prices for these nice Ricoh cameras through the roof. The camera weighs just 177 grams, without battery (one CR2 battery).
Although the Mini II has a built-in UV filter, it doesnt have a retractable lens cover so dont scratch it!
I just wonder if the electronic concern has been overblown by taste-makers who had a vested interest in selling Leicas and collectable cameras when the value of electronic cameras was essentially a zero-profit game? IMO, you answered that with the One Small Problem section. Great write up on a great camera. The lens is not protected when closed, so smudging and scratching pose a threat. Ears will look distant, eyeballs will stretch away from the nose, and the nose will look gargantuan. But why? Although it is waterproof (up to 5m) it works as any point and shoot would above the water line! In long, its complicated. The major addition was improved optical lens coatings. I dont necessarily offer this same advice, but I understand why others do. I heated it up and reapplied the glue, which fixed the unit. Film photography isnt for everyone and certainly not the most practical medium in which to do so, but for many it helps them be more intentional about seeking and capturing lifes fleeting moments, and thats priceless. Admittedly, this article barely scratches the surface of the world of 35mm point and shoot cameras. Decidedly sharper and more contrasty than the Ricoh, its autofocus is quick and decisive and dead-on accurate, and it features a great fill-flash (night portrait) mode. I think that must be it. Its ease of use clears the mind. Aperture: f/3.5 Many consider it the king of 35mm point and shoot cameras.
