Will the expander kit remove the ridge created by U clamps also? Because of this, the material of exhaust pipe that youre likely to work with can change the specific kind of expander you may want. I used a impact gun on it until it exploded n stripped out. I've tried the cheapy/screw type expanders a few times and never completed a single joint. So I expanded that end a little and left it to sit for 5 minutes or so.

You know, to remove the ridge from the clamp and make it round again. I'v had them for years but I know you could get them for less than $100.00. I've found the best way to put an exhaust together is to either size it so tubes slide together, or run with all one size of pipe and make sleeves to fit.
I use one of those manual pipe expanders to make squished pipes round again, I've never had any luck expanding one enough for a slip fit, it ends up not quite round. The cheap one is only to make the pipe round again, the expensive one will allow you to make a pipe slide over another one. While you may be able to increase the tube size slightly with these tools, they are really made to reshape a previously clamped tube. It's big, heavy, and in the way most of the time, but when it comes to bending and expanding, it can't be beat. I'd like to minimize the use of adapters. Weld a flange on each end and bolt them together. Many tailpipe expanders available on eBay can help bend tubes in addition to expanding the metal. Mine are built on the principal of the expanding reamer. Once used, it will expand the diameter of the pipe to allow it to fit with your existing exhaust system parts. I don't know how much you are going to use this tool but that seems pricey. I bought one of those cheap "tail pipe" expanders and I am not having much luck with it.

I've done several this way and they always work. While looking at tooltopia at exhaust tools I see there are some newer versions of exhaust expanders. Considered it has the word 'turbo' in the ad, I'm also going to guess its marketed toward the backyard 'mechanic' that will use it once and won't know the difference anyways. Hydraulic: Hydraulic options use a hand pump and a hydraulic ram to expand the pipes. Or just fit them carefully and bring them to a welder to weld them.
JavaScript is disabled. impact guns work on the Am pro expanders, but you have to be careful, as the threads are soft and they strip out very easy.. had that happen to 2 of them. Then just use a pair of hoseclamps to close it up and weld up the gap. I did a 4" exhaust on a diesel one time and accidentally tightened down a U clamp and the inner pipe wasn't in all the way so the outer pipe had a ridge in it now and wouldn't let the inner pipe slide in. I have found that if you cut a piece off the end then make a cut across that piece it will spring open to fit over the original pipe. But they do make strait fit (not stepped) ones for that purpose. I've abused it since then and it's held up. Thanks Big Kev. They will do the job but don't allow a lot of finesse or even-looking results. I have the one with the bearing got it from snap on likely its rebranded lisle . I would avoid other methods along with butt welding.
