If I came back I would play royal obidos before playing either West Cliffs or Praia del ray both in terms of course and experience. You may argue the extreme demand off the tee with usually native areas on both sides of the fairways but they are quite wide so if wind is not lateral and strong it is playable, even for higher handicaps. I can't think of any tee boxes we stood on and weren't in awe of the views (coastal and inland), bright colours amongst the flora and mature trees. 12th faces the bay and green seems to be in an infinity end and 16th has a blind shot to a fantastic green. Forced carries from the tee will be a challenge to some at West Cliffs. No buggies available, its a long course, with long distances between holes so you need a buggy or pretty fit. Definitely coming back ! What is difficult about the golf course is, that the course does not forgive mistakes (statement of the starter: only 5% of the balls are found in the rough (trust him)).

The course has the two loops of 9 coming back to the Club House which is always good if you want to play only 9, for double start for Tournaments, etc. Front 9 is very tight and will need some good drives just to get to the fairway, the back 9 is stunning with the 10th & 18th as stand out holes. West Cliffs is well worth seeing for sure but I would also recommend you get along to nearby Praia dEl Rey on your visit to this area. I think in that respect the layout is a real challenge but you can overcome it with use of a buggy. However losing a ball short of the fairway must happen a lot. The eighteenth will live long in my memory. Arrival and club house are majestic and you should play here to enjoy the rough nature rather sooner than later, as the course will be surrounded by colony of contemporary villas soon. As four 12 handicappers we got round in 4 hrs 40. There is not respite with a long carry required at the 8th. attractive location where it fits seamlessly into its natural surroundings. The conditioning of the course was patchy and the greens were somewhat inconsistent and not nearly as good as Praia del Reis. The other 3 are reachable to very well protected greens depending on wind, I have to highlight the view from 13th green to the tee and the ocean on the back .

This really does represent great value at any time of the year. the vast majority of the holes, it was only necessary to site the green I was met on the first tee by a very friendly starter. which in time will offer residential opportunities and a future 5-star hotel.

There are also multiple blind tee shots on the course (in particular the last 3 holes) and hidden bunkers or sandy waste areas across the fairway in the landing zone (like on the 7th par 5).
