If you are full day Pre-K or Kindergarten you are probably going to have two or three center times during your day and the amounts of time spent at centers may be dictated by your school. We do small group activities during center time, but after each child has completed the small group tasks, they are free to go back to play. Add your own text to these done-for-you resources and create a center routine that works for you and your kids! It does not have to be struck to loudly, make it as pleasant as possible. Other classes, however choose to do bikes only on a certain day, sand toys on another, etc. I do ask them to put away any materialsthey got outbefore they move to the next center.
I run my center time almost the same wayexcept that I do limit the number of children in each center (adjusting it to add more or less depending on interest). Most activities sit on trays on the shelf and students carry the tray to a table or spot on the floor and must return it to the shelf before choosing another activity. I let the kids choose where they go and change when they want, but I have at times made a chart on the board of where everyone is, so that if they walk away and leave a mess, I can see who did it and ask them to go back. I use a gong (strike 3 times) to signal a warning and/or clean-up. All I can say is, while your free choice may work for youit is not the only way to have developmentally appropriate curriculum. It is my opinion that center time is only successful if your using the system that you as a classroom teacher is comfortable with. Ive been very tempted to change clean up time to pick up time because too many children want to play with the toy brooms and mops when they need to be picking up and putting things back on shelves. Free choice! In the district I teach in, I am mandated to complete 3 rotating center activities. Our curriculum says we should have sand, but our county schools head of matinance says we cant have it. I teach 3s with mild/moderate disabilities including autism. We say Time to Sort! Youd be amazed at how much more interested the kids are in sorting the toys into their right places rather than clean up the toys! I do free choice centers too but to encourage children to engage in different activities, I only offer 4 centers a day. Also the kids who have to go potty every day as soon as clean up starts lol! We all clean up as a team and they quickly learn that even though they did not play there, we all work as a team. Just wanted to leave a comment about getting kids to cooperate at clean-up timewe do a 5 minute warning and then we start our 10 second clean-up countdown.My assistant started doing this last school year and the kids love it because they want to beat the clock! It sounds like a lot but I only have 5 centers so thats only 5 new things a week. When the 5 minutes are up we ring the bell again and together we stop, stand , say, and sign, Please stop it is time to clean up. I found that signing the words makes the children put down whatever they were playing with. This is the same way that I run my centers. Thank you for such good advice! The play time in centers is closer to 45 minutes, as there is a play planning process first. At clean up time there are deserted centres with stuff everywhere. For the most part, this is successful, but you know that theres always those days when an area is super messy and it takes longer to clean up. My room is divided right down the middle with different centers on each side. Children are not empty vessels that we need to pour information into. The blocks center is yellow and the symbol is a stack of blocks. They can only go to the center once a week, ensuring that they will try other areas. That way, as soon as they hear it, they recognize it and know exactly what to do. I love how you do things and may share some of your ideas with my teacher. Thanks for sharing this. While that sounds nice in theory (sustained attention and building peer interactions), I dont see how any 4 year old could stay in one center for an entire hour and still be a happy little person. To make the center board with all the center signs, I printed them smaller.
Its important for young children to be able to make choices and to learn how to make their own plans for what they will do. However, Im now opening my own daycare and was wondering the best way to do centers for younger children. I do centers the very same way ! I have gone to whole training sessions about center time that encouraged the necklace thing. Thank you for your wealth of information! Rice every day could get very irritating for those who have to clean it up so change it out with other fun things. The children tended to move in herds from one center to the next and did not self regulate if a center was too crowded and it was stressful on everyone to clean up constantly as they moved around. We have the room divided into three areas (coded by colored stars), each with a couple centers within (such as writing, dramatic play and science). . As soon as everything settles down (usually around week three or four) you can interact with the children more because youll spend less time redirecting.
