To be honest, I could have done with wearing ear defenders. The beating goes on for quite some time, often hours. you forgot to say how much paper/sawdust you are using. ), the cellulose fibers need to be separated from the watery mixture.
If you've shred your junkmail to make the paper, the baking soda makes it come out less gray. Have a WONDERful day! This is a mechanical process that breaks cell walls, and unravels individual strands of cellulose from the fibre surfaces. :), We're sorry you didn't like this Wonder, g. Luckily, there are many more Wonders you can explore on Wonderopolis! who is the author?
We hope this Wonder was helpful! Reply
? yes, but the paper is not grey when it dries. ?
The vat is the container the pulp floats in.
That is a fine activity, and one which kept me gainfully employed for four years. :), We're glad you liked this Wonder, H!
I think the word cellulose is a big word. I will do some further research and experimentation, and return to papermaking from raw materials some time in the future. Have you tried adding scents yet? This Instructable however, will cover the manufacture of paper from virgin fibres, that is, from plant to paper with no recycling, using a mixture of vaguely-traditional techniques from the European and Japanese papermaking styles. Any reason this may be a bad idea? Wonder 426: How Can You Recharge Your Batteries? Wonder 211: How Are Books Made? The length of time depends on a lot of factors, like the temperature, the pH of your water and the age of the plant stems, but it will typically be in the range of one to four weeks.
Tub sizing is traditionally performed by dipping the paper into a tub of starch or gelatin solution. For my chem paper I need to contact an experpert. Your specialised equipment is now ready. When the sheets are dry, they will be quite wrinkly. Or 3d molds? :-) Thanks so much for the tut!
Wood can be turned to pulp in a couple of different ways. Stack the ironed sheets under a light weight, such as back between the (dry) chopping boards, and leave them in a corner for at least 24 hours to condition, when the moisture content of the paper settles to match the humidity of the air. Check the state of the fibres each day until you are happy with it. You are now ready to couch the sheet ---------------------------------------- The nettle fibres proved to be very slow-draining, so each sheet had to stand a while to drain. Virgin pulp is either "mechanical", which is basically round-up wood, or "chemical", which is a cooking process, when the lignin (which makes older paper go yellow and brittle) is dissolved away by various caustic chemicals. I am doing a project on different types of paper, can you tell me if trees are only used to make blank and/or lined paper?
We have to be mindful of how much wood we cut down so that animals still have plenty of habitat in which to live. For example, cotton fibers are often used to make the paper that money is printed on. Thanks for sharing that information, Niomi!
Flax would probably work to give a strong sheet, much like cotton (they use the fibre to make bank notes and cigarette papers). Hi, Mo!
Unless you are saying that what you were doing was identical to what is going on here.

Kindly share if possible. I collected a large carrier-bag full of nettles of a mixture of ages, from fresh growth to mature plants. Since I have prepared virgin fibres, I do not have the legacy or prior treatments, and the nettle fibres (particularly those from the inner stem) were not flexible enough to form a proper sheet. Hang the cloths to dry, with sheets still stuck. you will need a blender I did not have one but I bought a mini food processor for cheap then as it was not made for liquids I just wrapped duck tape around the lid to stop it from spilling everywhere.
:), You're welcome, Victoria! It is a hard process to make paper from trees, but it is also fascinating how they do it. Looks great I have been doing this for years. Great question, sans! In all likelihood, you will get equally-successful results by going directly to the next step.
Actually, that's a good idea, but the search-term you need is "ball mill". If you're up for a field trip, ask an adult friend or family member to take you to a local office supply store. Yes, remember that the fibres have to be beaten for 8 hours, until you see a paste. These have already been treated, both chemically and mechanically, to flow smoothly, to cling to each other and to form a cohesive matrix.
We are happy to have you WONDERing with us! Thanks for commenting, Choctaw! The paper goes on top of that.

You can submit question to the Wonder Bank! There's no need to waste this time, though - spend it making your papermaking equipment. While the stems are retting, check each day to see if the water needs changing - give the stems a stir, and if the water looks brown or generally unpleasant, pour it down the drain and refresh it. discusses papyrus! The deckle is the frame that stops the pulp draining off the edges of the mold. Thanks for asking, Happyjoy! :D, Hi I was wondering if paper could be made for something other than trees, Hi! We hope you are able to find an expert to talk to, Erin! If you do, you'll make everyone BARK at you! Then, to press, you can use a bottle as a roller, and finally add the diluted pva glue (rather than adding glue to the vat). How do you guys think of all this stuff? It was also clear that a lot more energy was being transferred to the pulp, as the water temperature rose well above body-heat. Coincidentally, google search for using a tumbler for making paper yielded nothing.
Having referred to failure in the title of this step, the failure is not total. It smells. Every few minutes, the papermaker pauses to pick through the fibres to lift out loose specks of bark or discoloured fibre.
Keep a track of how much water and stem you use, and how long to blend it for, so that you can repeat the same for each batch with less fiddling about. no you can use paper ,card, grass , leaves , flowers. Thanks for this great instructional and video. We encourage you to take a Wonder Journey and see what you discover!! Get creative. Thanks for visiting Wonderopolis for your report.
