With the opening scenes of this movie, you wonder if this is a sequel to a wonderful romance or a transplanted suburban breakup. If the truth be told, my eagerness to sit through a sequel to "Romancing the Stone" only slightly surpassed my desire to revisit my periodonist. When Jack's boat lights up the nighttime harbor, the story takes off! This one has lots of adventure and action (even more than the original, and is also far more violent). Surprise: The Jewel of the Nile, the further adventures of romance novelist Joan Wilder (Kathleen Turner) and adventurer Jack Colton (Michael Douglas), is a good night at the movies. Even so, it lacks some of the pleasures of "Romancing," especially the development of the romance between Douglas and Turner. When Jack's boat lights up the nighttime harbor, the story takes off! "The Jewel of the Nile" is a follow-up to "Romancing the Stone". Co-starring Danny DeVito. The Jewel of the Nile is a fun ride! But the original contract specified a sequel, and it's to everybody's credit that "The Jewel of the Nile" is an ambitious and elaborate attempt to repeat the success of the first movie; it's not just a ripoff. As a sequel to Romancing the Stone, the script of The Jewel of the Nile is missing the deft touch of the late Diane Thomas but Lewis Teague's direction matches the energy of the original. When Joan Wilder is abducted while on a trip along the Nile, her boyfriend, Jack Colton, and pal Ralph rush to rescue her and retrieve a fabled jewel. If there's ever a good example as to why sequels are rarely as good as the original, it is The Jewel of the Nile. With the opening scenes of this movie, you wonder if this is a sequel to a wonderful romance or a transplanted suburban breakup. The Jewel of the Nile. Rambunctious sequel to Romancing The Stone: six months later, Joan runs into trouble with an evil potentate and Jack is once again in search of a precious jewel. The Jewel of the Nile takes up where Romancing the Stone left off, with romance novelist Joan Wilder (Kathleen Turner) traveling around the world with her boyfriend, Jack Colton (Michael Douglas). OK, but weak sequel to the first Douglas-Turner outing. This is the sequel to "Romancing the Stone" where Jack and Joan have their yacht and easy life, but are gradually getting bored with each other and this way of life. A very nice surprise for a sequel. It lacks the greatness of the original but it keeps the same spirit. The Jewel of the Nile is a fun ride! Joan accepts an invitation to go to some middle eastern country as a guest of the sheik, but there she is abducted and finds her- self involved with the "jewel". A very nice surprise for a sequel.
